In addition to reading gossip magazines, cheer against the best team, spoil a TV serie to your friend (thus ruining a friendship decades), do not pass the ball to your touchy friend thus achieving the same effect as the television serie, a favorite hobby of human beings is to check how many public holidays there are in a year.

That’s how it goes: usually in mid-January, still emotionally drunk after the Christmas holidays, we browse the calendar to search the beloved red numbers, daydreaming trips, long weekends, extra sleep to be programmed in those coveted days away from work or school.

But sometimes fate is not our friend and we find that most of the holidays fall on a Sunday!

Farewell, then, to the weekend in Paris and the meeting with your long lost friends; goodbye trips and diners out the door and adieu romantic surprises to your faraway love.

Sad and disappointed, we go back to our working routine hoping that next year is gonna be better.

This emotional disorder does not happen in the UK and Ireland since there they have the bank holiday, proclaimed each year by the legal device of a royal proclamation in order to move bank holidays that would otherwise fall on a weekend. In this way, public holidays are not ‘lost’ in years when they coincide with weekends

No panic and no lost holidays, but “the first Monday in May, last Monday in May, the first Monday in June etc”. Smart People, aren’t they?

And this is the reason why

1) Today, the last Monday of August, Training Vision – our office in Portsmouth – is closed

2) going for an internship or a language course in the UK can be even more interesting.

What’s left to say? Enjoy your bank holiday!
